The 4th graders had an amazing time on their trip to Augusta. We got to spend some time at the Maine State Museum looking at their wonderful displays of Maine history and wildlife. We were also very fortunate to visit Governor John Baldacci in his office in the State House!
Our two classes enjoyed a special guest last Friday. Mr. Rand’s mom, Judy Smith, stopped in to make flower pots and cards for the Mother’s Day weekend. Judy owns Judy’s Scrappin’ Stampin’ & Gifts in Orono and she brought some of her supplies for the kids to make their cards.
Mr. Rand’s class has been partnering up with an 8th grade class from LMS for some reading and writing lessons derived from the book, “Guys Write for Guys Read.” This has been a wonderful experience for both classes as the students discuss the importance of becoming lifelong readers and writers.
A middle school in Florida did a wonderful version of a popular song rewritten with lyrics about reading. We’ve printed out the lyrics for the students at OTES and hope the students will practice singing the song with the new lyrics and be able to sing it at the end of year assembly. Literacy Night was a huge success last night. Kids had all kinds of fun participating in activities centered around literacy, and everyone got to go home with a book!

Mr. Dill from the University of Maine came in to visit the fourth grade last Friday. He is an entomologist with a large collection of insects and other animals from around the world. Some of the kid’s favorite animals that he brought in were the stick bug, the hedgehog, and of course, the tarantula!
There will be a science test next week on Animal Behaviors, Food Chains, and Food Webs. The test will be Wednesday, March 17 for Mr. Rand’s class and Thursday, March 18 for Mr. Lucas’s class. Click on the link to download a copy of the study guide.StudyGuide
Mr. Brock Sanborn, a wildlife ecology major at the University of Maine, came in and gave a great presentation on some animals that you would find in the Maine wild. He had some animal furs and skulls for the kids to look at also.
Mrs. Wilcox has been talking about stress and some good ways for kids to deal with stressful situations. One thing that the kids did was make stress balls that they can squeeze when they begin to feel stressed out about something.
We had a great time working at McDonald’s tonight for McTeacher’s Night. The place was packed and 25% of all proceeds are going straight to OTES!! Thanks to everyone who stopped by to support our school.
