End of the Year Backup

Posted by: admin | June 3, 2010 | No Comment |

Teachers, you need to backup your computers before turning them in to the IT department for reimaging.  For most of you, this will mean backing up your Desktop, Documents, and Firefox/Safari BookmarksSome will also need to backup iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, and the MyApps folder.

I will outline the process and provide links below.

Desktop, Documents, and MyApps Folder

Media: Thumbdrive or external hard drive
Directions:
Drag the whole folders to your external device.  * Make sure you see a green plus sign green-plus when you do it or you are doing it wrong.

Safari and Firefox

Media: Thumbdrive or external hard drive

Directions: Matt Cyr put together a nice video on how to do this…(Show off ;)

iPhoto

Media: Blank DVD or CD(s)

Directions: http://www.maciverse.com/iphoto-backup-dvd.html

iTunes

Media: Blank DVD or CD(s)

Directions:

  1. Deauthorize (If you used your iTunes account you need to deauthorize the computer because you can only have 5 computers access your iTunes account.  After reimaging, iTunes will think you are accessing from another computer and you will eventually get a message about too many computers are authorized for this account.)
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. Choose Store > Deauthorize Computer (In earlier versions of iTunes, access this option from the Advanced menu).
    3. Select “Deauthorize Computer for Apple Account” and enter your Apple ID and password.
  2. Backup your Library

iMovie (Most difficult backup)

Media: External Hard drive (These files will be pretty big)

Directions: Here are basic directions.   PS:  You may have other iMovie folders in the Movies folder.  If so, copy them also.  For example “iMovie Original from speed conversion”

You can copy and paste information from their wikipedia page or the Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association page.  If you want to find pricing you can search on yachtworld.com (Enter “Cape Dory” for manufacturer and click on the “Sail” button)

Do NOT talk to others in the class or look at other screens.  It is just like you were taking a written final in another class.

Fair Use Copyright Laws

Posted by: admin | May 20, 2010 | No Comment |

Here is the fair use copyright law.  We will talk more about it in class and what it means to your use of photos, etc.

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

  1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
  2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
  3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
  4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors
